Snakefarm is acclaimed downtempo/folktronica duo Anna Domino and Michel Delory. After a decade in Europe recording as Anna Domino for chic indie labels including Les Disques du Crépuscule and Factory Records, the cosmopolitan Domino/Delory partnership later relocated to New York and cut Songs From My Funeral, an album of traditional American songs reworked in radical retrofit style. 'I was waiting for the light,' explains Anna. 'I thought, we should take a bunch of those great old songs about murder and such, and start doing them with modern arrangements, just to see what would happen. As the breadth of the canon revealed itself, it became apparent that countless versions of every song existed, with no two versions the same. So taking liberties with Snakefarm was really just an extension of that tradition.' 2011 saw the release of the second Snakefarm album, My Halo At Half-Light.

SONGS FROM MY FUNERAL LTMCD 2539 £10
First released in 1999, this sombre yet slinky album defies easy categorisation. Acid blues? Trip-hop? Troubadour? Nick Cave meets Sneaker Pimps? None - or all - of the above? Defying genre diktat, haunting Songs From My Funeral sold 30,000 copies on its original release, with St James and Banks of the Ohio becoming airplay hits in America. Booklet includes artist biography, lyrics and images. Full tracklist: St James, Rising Sun, This Train That I Ride, Frankie and Johnny, Laredo, John Henry, Black Girl, Tom Dooley, Banks of the Ohio, Pretty Horses
Reviews: 'Slinky, funky interpretations of American standards and folk/blues classics' (Boomkat, 11/2010); 'Anna Domino has a new role as chronicler-in-chief of America's most blood-soaked folk music' (The Times, 10/1999); 'Groundbreaking trip-hoppery through the sacred cows of American folk music, right on the button' (Folk Roots, 11/1999); 'Brilliant!' (Rock n' Reel, 11/1999); 'This album had already caused major waves for the striking boldness of the way it strips down hoary old folk-blues standards and reinvents them in a series of astonishing inventive free-form arrangements. Arrangements swerve daring from trip-hop to subtle jazz to minimalist rock to mild heavy metal - a strange brew indeed' (Mojo, 08/1999); 'The familiar strains of traditional Appalachian ballads, blues standards, dust bowl folk; the harmonicas traded for electronica, but still a banjo and dobro here and there, and over it all, sultrysharp vocals as rich and disarming as the greenblack waters of the drowned French Quarter. Truly astounding!' (Amazon.com, 2001)

The immaculate sleevenotes only further the excitement' (Record Collector, 09/10); 'An absolute joy. The 1981 cover version of The Boy From Ipanema by Parisian trio Antena is just one delight on this compilation of music from Brussels label Les Disques du Crepuscule' (The Word, 08/2010); 'A wonderful compilation of discreet, confused, lascivious, poppy, relaxed, demanding, lost in reverie female voices from the legendary Brussels label' (Westzeit, 09/2010); 'Cosmopolitan Belgian label Les Disques Du Crepuscule was the top of an elite tier along with Factory, Rough Trade and El' (The Big Takeover, 09/2010)
